The best sitcoms of all time are often a subject of debate among critics, and most often everyone has a favorite choice. Sitcoms are a great way to escape the mundane realities of everyday life and get yourself a refreshing break. 

We’ve made a list of the best sitcoms in the history of television that you must watch at least once. 

1. Brooklyn Nine-Nine 

The fictional NYPD precinct of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is led by a stern captain who must deal with the shenanigans of his investigators, particularly Andy Samberg’s juvenile Jake Peralta. For its compelling characters and the synergy amongst the brilliant ensemble, the show gained great recognition and established a passionate fan base. Nevertheless, although being regarded by viewers as one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, the series production did not go smoothly.

NBC immediately picked up the beloved show after Fox dropped it after five seasons, and the series was renewed for other several years.

2. The Office

This hit UK series, created, written, and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, and featuring Gervais as the lead character, only lasted two seasons but made an excellent impression, pushing Gervais into prominence and subsequently being turned as a much longer-running sitcom in the United States.

The series, which followed the employees at a dismal paper company’s headquarters, became well-known for its cringe humor, which focused on the most uncomfortable aspects of professional interactions and found a lot of relevant comedy in the way.

3. The Simpsons

The Simpsons is the longest-running American written primetime television series, with a set of characters who have remained mostly intact over the span of thirty seasons.

Many fans believe The Simpsons’ golden period has passed, yet multiple honors and nostalgic favorites put The Simpsons high on any TV fan’s list of the greatest sitcoms of all time.

4. Derry Girls 

This coming-of-age show is one of the greatest sitcoms on this list. The plot revolves around the lives of four teenage girls from Derry and one English fella amid the Troubles of Northern Ireland in the 1990s. 

5. Friends

Friends is without a doubt the top live-action sitcom of all time. The show aired for 10 seasons between 1994 and 2004 and continues to attract nostalgia from viewers, with a reunion episode airing in 2021 that drew an amount of publicity.

The show followed the lives of six adults as they tried to negotiate the highs and lows of city life in Manhattan. According to newspapers such as The New York Times, it is well-established as a teaching tool that assists people all over the world in acquiring the English language.

6. Rick and Morty

Rick & Morty takes the top spot as the highest-rated sitcom of all time. The adventures of brilliant scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandchild Morty as they traverse through numerous dimensions and universes for high-concept escapades are chronicled in this animated adult sci-fi sitcom. 

The show initially aired on Adult Swim in 2013, and it is currently in its fifth season. The show’s popularity continues to rise because of its distinctive humor and unique scripting.

7. Schitt’s Creek 

After being cheated out of his riches by a business manager, video-store billionaire John Rose and his family are forced to relocate to Schitt’s Creek, a little backwoods village that John purchased for his son David as a joke. What begins as fish-out-of-water humor evolves into a celebration of togetherness and generosity, thanks to co-creators and co-stars Eugene and Dan Levy’s ability to strike the exact mix between real kindness and side-splitting cynicism.
